Joseph Russell is currently a fourth year student at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studies organ with Alan Morrison. Mr. Russell is a recipient of the Stephanie Yen-Mun Liem Azar Fellow. Prior to his acceptance at the Curtis Institute, Joe graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy, where he studied organ with Thomas Bara. He previously studied organ with Dr. Elizabeth Naegele and piano with Donna Fortney and Ruth Peck.
Mr. Russell has performed at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles (California), Hill Auditorium (Michigan), St. Mary the Virgin (New York), and the Musée des Augustins (Toulouse, France). Joe has been featured as a soloist with the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra and has been broadcasted on Interlochen’s IPR. He has also performed with the World Youth Symphony Orchestra and the World Youth Wind Symphony of the Interlochen Arts Camp.
Joe has been apart of numerous competitions, including the Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival, where he won both the First Prize and the Hymn Playing Award in September 2012. He also won the Chicago Regional AGO competition in April 2013. Mr. Russell is a recipient of the Fine Arts Award at both the Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp.
In addition to his studies at Curtis, Joe is also the Organ Scholar at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Chestnut Hill, under the direction of Zach Hemenway. He also studies Harpsichord and Continuo playing at Curtis with Leon Schelhase.
