Michael T. Britt, a Baltimore native, is a graduate of The Peabody Conservatory of Music, where he studied organ with Dr. Paul L. Davis. During his studies at Peabody, Michael was the recipient of the Richard L. Phelps Award and a three-time recipient of the Richard Ross Award for organ. Further studies have been with Thomas Spacht, Donald Sutherland, John Rose and John Walker. He was also a finalist in the Arthur Poister Competition in 1984.
As well as being a frequent recitalist of classical organ literature, Michael is a performer of theatre organ music and is in demand throughout the country as a silent film accompanist, performing for chapters of the American Theatre Organ Society and the American Guild of Organists.. He has been featured on Maryland Public Television and other televised presentations on the theatre pipe organ and its history. In 1998 Michael accompanied films for the National Film Registry Tour sponsored by the Library of Congress. He has also played at movie palaces throughout the country and is a frequent performer at the Byrd Theatre in Richmond, Virginia, as well as the Carolina Theatre in Greensboro, North Carolina. In 2002, Michael performed a series of concerts at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C., and was also invited to give a private concert for the Italian Ambassador and his wife upon the renovation of the Aeolian organ housed in the Italian Embassy. In 2005, Michael was brought to Princeton University to accompany the silent film classic, “Phantom of the Opera” at the University Chapel where recently he completed his fifteenth performance of this annual event.
In May of 2009, Michael gave a recital on the organ at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris and, in 2017, performed at the Riverside Church in New York City. Most recently, Michael was invited to perform at the Pori Organ Festival in Pori, Finland in June of 2022.
In June of 2012, Michael was appointed Minister of Music and organist at Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, Maryland. He is also on the faculty at the Community College of Baltimore County and serves as Organist at Beth-El Congregation, as well as house organist at the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick, Maryland.
