The Shepherds seen in the Nativity Scene are a symbol of worship and praise. After Jesus was born, an angel appeared in the fields where the Shepherds were watching over their flocks, proclaiming:
"Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
-Luke 2: 10-12.
The Shepherds listened to the angels and set off to find the Christ child. In the Nativity scene, the Shepherds are surrounding Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. They traveled to Bethlehem to see the Savior of our world and honor him. Instead of bringing lavish gifts as the Three Wise Kings had, the Shepherds come bearing simple gifts such as fruits and animals, representing the poor.
