Soon after Jesus was born, a special star represented the birth of the Savior of the world. This star led the three wise kings, Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar, to travel from the east to Bethlehem in search of Christ the child.
All three kings traveled with gifts for Jesus. Gaspar brought the gift of Frankincense, symbolizing priesthood and worship. Melchior brought Gold, symbolizing kingship. Balthazar brought Myrrh, symbolizing death and mourning.
The three wise kings are placed in the Nativity scene as a reminder of those who travelled great distances to meet and honor Christ our Savior.
