Become a Weekday Volunteer Cantor

St. Augustine told us that when we sing, we pray twice. One of the best ways to get personally involved with the music ministry at St. Patrick’s Cathedral is by volunteering to be a Weekday Cantor. Weekday Cantors lead the congregation in song during the liturgy.

Prerequisites are:

• formal vocal training 
• previous Roman Catholic cantor experience 
• ability to read music 
• good ear and vocal technique 
• good social skills 
• desire to grow in the cantor ministry 
• availability during the cathedral’s schedule of daily Masses

• simple vocalise 
• sight-reading exercise from standard hymns 
• basic piano proficiency test 
• (optional: a prepared classical solo)

Cantors who pass the audition process have the opportunity to serve at one or more of the weekday midday Masses as well as the 5:30 Mass on Mondays and Fridays, depending on availability. We also maintain an active substitute list.
